Die Herstellung der Polyamide kann durch Polykondensation von Diaminen mit Dicarbonsäuren erfolgen, z. B. indem das aus Hexamethylendiamin und Adipinsäure gebildete Salz (AH-Salz) unter Stickstoff auf 215-270 ºC erhitzt wird:
 
Ein anderer Syntheseweg geht von Aminocarbonsäuren oder deren zyklischen Säureamiden, den Lactamen, aus. Bei der ringöffnenden Polymerisation von Caprolactam bei 240-300 ºC in Gegenwart von etwas Wasser entsteht zunächst Aminocapronsäure, die unter Rückbildung des Wassers der Polykondensation unterliegt:
 
Polyamidtypen werden nach der Anzahl der zusammenhängenden C-Atome bezeichnet. Beim Diamin-Dicarbonsäure-Typ wird zuerst die C-Zahl des Diamins, dann die C-Zahl der Dicarbonsäure angegeben, z. B. Polyamid 66 (PA 66). Die größte technische Bedeutung haben Polyamid 6 (PA 6) und Polyamid 66 (PA 66). Polyamide sind teilkristalline Thermoplaste (Kunststoffe) mit Schmelztemperaturen von 215-220 ºC (PA 6) beziehungsweise 255-260 ºC (PA 66) und relativ hohem Wasseraufnahmevermögen (PA 6 bis etwa 10 %). Bis Mitte der 1950er-Jahre nur zum Verspinnen von Polyamidfasern genutzt, haben Polyamide seitdem als zähe und abriebfeste technische Kunststoffe im Fahrzeugbau (z. B. Lenkräder, Gaspedale), in der Elektrotechnik oder für Folien zunehmende Bedeutung erlangt. Aromatische Polyamide heißen Aramide.
